Which is better, a petrol or diesel mk 1 golf?
Looking to buy a second hand mm 1 golf and the majority that I have found are diesel. Just wondering what is actually better? If anyone has had any past experience with either it would be greatly appreciated to hear about it.

The MK 1 Golf came out in 1974. Back then most diesels were slow, a lot louder than today's diesels, smokey especially when you put your foot down and really hated cold starts getting a while to get running in the morning. This was your typical diesel from back then. If you want a MK 1 Golf I would choose a petrol one without a second thought.
Keep in mind cars this old are hard to find now as many of them have rusted out. If you find one make sure you do a good check over the entire car, the engine and all the other parts as well as the car's body.

Emissions will be a problem with a car of that age. Safer to buy a petrol version. I assume you are in the UK. Older diesel car owners will shortly be punished with rising road tax costs and maybe even be subjected to tougher emission regs. So petrol is the sensible choice.

If you are in the UK, avoid diesel.

If you are elsewhere - avoid diesel.
