Would it be redundant to get an oil change and a tune up service maintenance? Are they the same?

I don t know much about cars.

I recently purchased a brand new Kia Soul in August of last year. It is due for its monthly/bimonthly oil change....

But I noticed that its hitting the 50k mile marker. Which, when I purchased the vehicle it only has 5-10 miles on it..

Someone had told me that in order to keep a new vehicles engine working properly, I need to keep regular maintenance, including tracking the tune-ups and oil-changes.

So, could someone educate me here a bit.... Is a tune-up an oil-change, are they different. Should I get both procedures done to my car.

Thanks, Nicole

No. An oil change is (sty with me here) when they change the oil and oil filter. A tune up is replacement of spark plugs, maybe plug wires, coil packs or whatever else your manufacturer specifies.

The oil and filter need changing every 3,000 miles.

A tune up consists of replacing the spark plugs, air filter, and cleaning the throttle body.

You should drain and fill the transmission ATF every 60,000 miles.

The antifreeze should be replaced every 3 years.

Rotate the tires every 15,000 miles.

Oil changes are not tune ups.

All of the above are maintenance's that should be performed if you want to get the most life out of your vehicle.

Perhaps you should actually READ the owner's manual that came with your car when you bought it. There are several pages devoted to MAINTENANCE of your car, and even a schedule of when these maintenance events should occur.

Here in New Zealand, using casual language, an oil change is just that. Oil and filter. Boom done. A 'tune up' or 'service' is a blanket term for everything else. E.g. air filter, spark plugs.

Brake fluid is generally left until it's as black as the ace of spades and the calipers are lousy with rust. Transmission fluid? Change that when the transmission is already beginning to fail, then rebuild it. Coolant is gleefully ignored until the car has overheated badly enough to warp the cylinder head(s) before being topped up, changed or leaks dealt with. Cars are treated to a new fuel filter only when the old one is so plugged up with sludge the car won't move under it's own power any longer.

Sarcastic rant about owners and their 'preventative' maintenance... ffs.

read all the other answers as far as servicing is concerned ...but your question is odd ...you say it was new last august ....just over 8 months ago ..it had 10 miles on it ...now its 50.000? thats good miles ..and your asking about service ?? ..does not add up

Timbo is right as usual. I also recommend that you read the service information which came with the car.

Kias in the UK get either an annual service (tune up means nothing to us) or one at 12000 miles whichever is sooner. The Kias in the US are the same as in the UK.

Strange that Americans still use this "Tune Up" phrase when today it actually means nothing.

All cars need preventative maintenance at regular intervals set by mileage and/or time. If done properly and on time no performance benefit will be noticed by the driver as these things need to be done before anything deteriorates.

Monthly or bi monthly oil change???? In the UK the Soul would need a change of oil around once every YEAR. Maybe there is something special about the operating conditions where you are that make this different though I doubt it.

The maintenance service, and please forget the mythical tune up, will differ each time. Some this, like brake fluid just need to be changed every 2 years, coolant may be 4 or 5 or 10 years depending on the type used.

Hi Nicole this is very much a case of " if it aint broke, dont fix it", get your oil and filter changed, but if the car is running fine, dont worry about a tune up. Make sure when they change the oil, they use engine flush and put a new filter on too. Many garages will do an oil change and not change the filter, so the new oil is going through a dirty filter

You need to get proper servicing.

    This is the schedule. http://www.kisouman.com/normal_maintenance_schedul...

Tune up does not apply. Modern cars don't require tune ups. The manufacturer of your car published a maintenance schedule, just follow that.
