What are bad areas of Memphis, TN?

Which areas are not safe to be in, around, or raise a family? I'm worried about shootings, drugs, and gangs.

As in most cities, the shootings, drugs and gangs are all the same people. If you don't get involved with drug dealers or gangs, you're pretty safe.

Memphis grew east from the river- so the houses go up by decades as you go east. So there's downtown, where the warehouses have been made over into lofts and condos (very nice, but probably not best for a family), midtown where the houses are big and date from the 1930s and 40s but either need fixing up or have been fixed up and are expensive (but people like to live there because of the theater, restaurants and parks) east Memphis, with houses from the 50s-70s, fairly reasonable, and then Germantown (expensive), Cordova and Collierville where most new families settle. Those are newer, bigger houses, and nice, suburban neighborhoods. Come visit and see for yourself.
