  • What was your hindu wedding experience like? ?

In particular, how difficult was working with your priest? I have only ever seen weddings in movies....and I want to go through the rites and rituals as necessary. Yet I do not know if the rituals will actually take as long as (i’ve heard) 3 hours. If anyone has any experience with hindu weddings, please comment and calm my nerves. Perhaps explain your experience.

  • A question for Indians: is Sanatana Dharma a way of life or a religion? ?

I have read many sources that agree with one or the other, so what do you believe? Is Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) a way of life or a religion? If it is a way of life, should someone who practices the dharma partake in the activities that surround Indian culture? If it is a religion, what practices are considered religious and which are cultural?

Say, for example, someone (who is not a native to India nor grew up with Sanatana Dharma) comes to embrace Sanatana Dharma. Say they wish to express their faith/way of life, on special occasions and in the everyday. Should they separate the religion from the culture? Or is it even possible to separate either because it is a way of life?

  • Wedding gown: tradition vs. religion?

    Hello,

I am planning my wedding. On the outside, I appear as a white American. However, I practice Sanatan Dharma (hinduism). I will be marrying a man who is American by birth and not Hindu, although he is open to the customs and beliefs. We will be partaking in hindu rites and rituals at our wedding. I am stuck between deciding if I want to wear a white gown or a traditional saree for the occasion. I have had the dream of wearing both, and silly as it may sound, I would personally like to wear white during the ceremony but a saree to the reception. This seems illogical to me as the ‘correct’ place for each garment would be the opposite, the saree at the ceremony and the white gown at the reception. And yet, I would like my wedding photos to be of me in a white gown. I do not know what to do, nix one and wear the other entirely? Perhaps. Please, any advice or scenarios would be appreciated. TIA

  • Can a non-Indian person have a Hindu wedding?

I am a converted hindu. I am American and so is my fiance. I would like to conduct my wedding using traditional hindu customs but am unsure how others would view this, especially since neither my nor his family is hindu.

  • How do I incorporate my faith into my wedding?

I was raised in a Lutheran Christian household. I am now a firm believer in the Advaita philosophy, most commonly associated with classic hinduism. I want to incorporate my faith into my wedding. I have studied the ways in which traditional hindu weddings are carried out. I want to do a ‘fusion’ using aspects of a traditional American wedding and that of a hindu ceremony. Would this be odd (or even appropriation?) as I was not born into a hindu household and I am not Indian nor is my fiance?

  • Question about the morning after pill?

So, my friend is about to lose her virginity in a few days. She says she wants it to be all natural, but I talked her into using the morning after pill. But she only bought one. She is going to stay with her boyfriend for over a week. If they have unprotected sex, and she takes the pill after the first time, will it keep her protected throughout the rest of the week if they choose to have unprotected sex again? From my understanding, the morning after pill makes the egg postpone ovulating. So I would think that she would be safe if she only took the one pill as long as it does its job. She will only be there a week. What do you all think? Im not saying its smart or anything, or that I agree with the method. But i just wanna make sure that the pill would protect her throughout the week if it postpones ovulation and she takes it right after the first time having unprotected sex.

  • Can I email an apartment complex?

I am helping my boyfriend look for an apartment complex. There is a particular place I am very interested in. I have shown my boyfriend the website and wants to check it out. The problem is he works a lot, and hasn't found time to contact the complex. Am I able to email or call the complex, and ask questions about the property on behalf of my boyfriend? It would be on his behalf because if we go through with the operation his name will be on the lease and he will be the one paying for it.

  • Why are bigger apartments cheaper?

I am looking for an apartment in Memphis. I am comparing prices at several locations, and I have noticed something odd. All of the larger apartments are listed for lower prices. For example, a studio apartment is $1000+ but a four bedroom two bath is $595. How is this possible? Why is this?

  • How does a courthouse wedding work?

My partner and I are considering getting married at the courthouse. I'm simply curious as to what all happens at the ceremony? Is it religiously affiliated at all? Will we be required to say vows? The state we are in does not require witnesses, if that makes any difference.
