Before the absurdity of Brexit, the UK was part of the EU. The EU has high standards for food. Chocolate in the EU contains a lot of Cocoa. Executives of the American food industry should be tried as war criminals, because of the poisonous CRAP they rape the American public with.

Because American chocolate uses a different recipe, which actually contains an ingredient of vomit, from milk crumb used in it. Americans like their chocolate because it's what they're used to. You like British chocolate because it's what YOU'RE used to. Now why different countries ended up making it different ways, I don't know.

I saw a TV programme a while ago that tested this. A chocolatier melted down some British, American, Swiss, and Belgian chocolate all into identical plain squares so there was no way to tell which was which, and the programme did a "vox pop" out on the streets to test this. Which does everyone think tastes best? Hardly a scientific poll, but the results were very predictable. All the Brits liked the British chocolate. They found a few who preferred the American chocolate, and they were all Americans living in the UK or visiting. Well stone me, what a surprise.

A couple of years back one of the major British manufacturers was sold to a US company. One of the first things they did was lower the amount of milk fat in their chocolate and replaced it with vegatable fat. Sales fell, reintroduced the milk fat and they went back up!

It has to do with the country's definition of chocolate. About 10 years ago or so, Hershey went to the FDA to redefine "chocolate". It's supposed to have cocoa butter, but now Hershey's doesn't. So, it's basically all sugar now and not worth the money. FWIW, "white chocolate" has no chocolate in it. So, it's a complete ripoff.
