Can police do anything about this?

If I attempt to pay a lower price for something using self checkout but in the end I actually gave the item back to the man. Then he said he could call the police or I just can have a warning and ban. Could he call the police because I didn't actually do the scam I gave the item back to the store before i was met by the security guard. So would police do anything

    The ATTEMPT to cheat is shoplifting. Failure in your criminal activity doesn't reduce the crime.

    Attempted theft and attempted fraud are both crimes

    Yiu showed an intent to deprive

    You do not have to leave the store.
