Character building?

I have a character who's engaged but her fiance and hers relationship is messed up.

Does this sound realistic and how can I make it better?

He wants a baby. She doesn't want one with him (he's abusive). She got pregnant once upon a time by him, snuck out and had an abortion then got her tubes tied. He found out and now the abuse is getting worse both mentally and physically.

Is it good and how can I make it better (i.e. revealing it later on in the story that she got her tubes tied or had the abortion (pick one))

I think it depends on how you set the scene. If you reveal the tube tying early but mention it offhand then bring attention back to it dramatically then it could be interesting (like he finds something related tot he operation, but you don't mention specifically what it is, and keep adding small moments like then, then he confronts her about it in a dramatic manner).
