how did jet go from meaning dark, jet black / whitby jet to a jumbo jet?

    The two meanings do not have the same etymology - the jet aeroplane meaning (thought to come from the old Frech 'jeter', meaning throw/thrust) did not come from the 'jet black' meaning (which came from the colour of the stone known as jet).

    jet is a stone found in the uk ..its black ...a jet is also a stream or pressure ..a jet engine uses rearward thrust thats where it gets its name from
