Car questions?

I like in general knowledge but I've just passed my driving test in UK, I'm mostly using autotrade looking for cars but I just have questions on what different payments you pay when owning a car.

1. So what are the different payments you need to pay when owning a car I know road tax is one of them?

2. How much is road tax a year is it about £20

3. If I get a car at £10000 how much is that going to cost monthly wise?

4. How much is insurance a month say if I had a car at £5000?

5. Can someone explain MPG to me. Like how much does it cost you to refill your car and how often do you do it because I'm thinking of getting a diesel

6. So what happens once you've payed all your car of?

7. I'm thinking of getting a fiesta, corsa, astra, golf, seat also it will be diesel and be manual is that a good choice of cars?

8. When looking at cars on autotrade what is my best bet, shall I get one with less mileage, MOT already done etc

Thank you guys if you answer this

Road tax varies from £0 to over £500 depending on age and emissions of the car.

Monthly loan payments - no one can tell you that as it depends on the interest rate and no one can forecast that BUT anything less than £200 a month is unlikely to clear the loan fast enough.

Insurance - cost varies WILD:LY depending on many circumstances. If you are under 24 expect £1500 to £5000 for the cars you mention per annum.

MPG - miles per gallon of fuel. A gallon is 4.54 litres so if fuel is at around £1.15 a litre as it is now then a gallon costs 4.54 x 1.15 = £5.22. So if the car you choose does 50mpg then it will cost £5.22 for every 50 miles you travel or if you like 10.5p for each mile.

Quoted mpg figures - the figures you see on the car ads are achieved in laboratory conditions and can be used ONLY to compare a car to another car. YOU WILL NOT GET THOSE FIGURES YOU WILL GET SOMETHING LESS THAN THOSE. No one can predict though how much less.

Diesel - they are going out of favour now that they have been found to be a much more polluting engine than petrol. Taxes and tolls are going to happen for diesel drivers soon and they are going to drop in value and become very unattractive purchases. So NO GET PETROL. Diesels cost more to look after and unless you are doing well above average annual mileages they make no sense now and will make less sense as time goes on. Manual is the best bet for a small engine car which you will need to have to keep costs down.

AUTOTRADER is just one of lots of different car selling sites. Do not restrict your search to just that one

The lower the mileage the better but that is to be balanced with the age of the car.

Never buy a used car that has not get a new or very nearly new MOT

Golf - no its too big for insurance for a first car as is Astra.

Seat is a car maker not a model of car

Corsa, Fiesta, Micra, Up, Polo, i10, Picanto and model names typical of the size you need to look at - there are a few others though.

Sorry there are too may variable for anyone to give you a fixed cost. Before you commit to buy at car you need to look at what those will be which will include getting a price for the actual insurance for the actual car

    1. Insurance; M.O.T. test; fuel; servicing; wear and tear costs.

    2. Anywhere between £0 and £2,000, depending on the car.

    3. That will vary enormously, depending on how much deposit you put down, where you buy the finance from and how long you take to pay it back.

    4. Insurance rates vary hugely, based on over 50 different factors. The value of the car being just one of those factors.

    5. MPG = miles per gallon, In other words, how far the car will travel on one gallon of fuel. If your car has a 10-gallon fuel tank and it averages 40mpg, you'll get around 400 miles from a tank. The cost of filling it up will vary, depending on the pump price. You refill the tank, when the level gets low.

    6. You own it entirely.

    7. Yes. They are the types of car most new drivers buy.

    8. Buy one with a warranty..
