There are a few differences.
H1Z1 currently supports more players and has more arcade shooter feel. Physics is loser (you can jump out of a moving car without hurting yourself). It has fewer weapons and reportedly more bugs. The action is faster are more arcade-like. Jump in and shoot everything that moves, is a perfectly valid strategy.
Battlegrounds has a lower player maximum and is a slower, more tactical feel. Physics are a lot harsher, car collisions can be lethal to the driver, meaning they are more for escaping than offensive weapons. Weapons also recoil a lot harder. There are more weapon variety, and weapons can be customized in the field. Despite being 'released' more recently, the game has received a lot more patches and it does have mod support. The action is more tactical, with longer ranged and more accurate weapons, you must move slowly and be aware of your surroundings at all times or you will be shot without seeing who shot you.
