is "begun in secret" a participle clause in this sentence?

Begun in secret his

study was expected to take a

long time to produce significant

results.

can I say the original sentence was: "his study which had begun in secret was expected to....."

and "which had" was omitted?

    Indeed much better to say: "His study, which he had begun in secret, was expected.....". Don't forget the commas.
