What can cause a hand to feel numbness and then fingers swell?
Left hand more so than right hand. When it happened before I could lower it and the circulation would return, but now it just feels a small numbness.

Go see your doctor.
That could be a few things, and some of them are far more serious than problems with your hand. Ask them to check your heart, and get a chest xray.
