Harry Potter! I don't dislike Lord of the Rings, but the movies tend to be extremely slow and I would pick the Harry Potter characters over the other book or movie any time. The writing style for the Lord of the Rings is exceptional as far as the author's level of writing goes, however I have to pick Harry Potter overall for character and other interest reasons. Just as Lord of the Rings has, the Harry Potter series still has something about the way that the books flow smoithly, keeps you intrigued and interested. It really, ultimately comes down to the type of person who is watching / reading either one because both draw a different crowd with the exception of a some people here and there.

Harry Potter’s portrayal of human nature is far more realistic. Rowling captures adolescent angst as well as any writer for children out there. She also addresses a number of tough moral choices of the kinds that real adults often face. Dumbledore was more-or-less grooming Harry to face his possible death the whole time; his motives were not purely in Harry’s best interests. And although Harry hero-worships his dead father, he later learns that his father had been a bit of a bully.
The Lord of the Rings legendarium is enormously imaginative and fantastically detailed, but it is told in a legendary style with black-and-white problems and mostly two-dimensional characters. Its chief villain is barely visible at all. The book is a romance (in the literary sense), not a novel. The Harry Potter books are novels.

Harry Potter. And I say that after nearly 50 years of being a fan of Tolkien. The Harry Potter books are far more readable, leave much less unanswered and have a better narrative. Of course, others will disagree, which is their right, but that is my opinion. I've read all of the books from both authors several times. The Lord of the Rings were introduced to me as a child, and Harry Potter as an adult, and it surprised even me that books for young people could captivate me as the Potter books did. They're perfect.
