Is "free" Pre-Check no longer done?
The last few times we have flown we have had Pre-Check status although we are not enrolled. A friend tells me that this "free" status is no longer happening. True?

That is true. If there are any people that still get TSAPre✓ status without being enrolled, their numbers are dwindling. There is enough people enrolled whereby the promotional is no longer needed.
People who enroll pay a fee to have their background checked and it is good for 5 years.

as other people have said, you can still get it but the odds are less and less, it was a promotion thing trying to get people to pay for pre check.
