What is another word for shocked?

I'm writing an essay, and I need to use the word shocked, but I want something more professional, I guess?

Update:

Example: "Happy, really?" I ask her shocked.

He's upset that his ex-girlfriend is trying to come back into his life.

What does "professional" mean? If you're a professional electrician, then there are occasions on which "shocked" would be the precisely correct professional word to use. And even if you're not talking about electricity, what's wrong with "shocked"? It's a perfectly good word. It's not like you're saying "horsie" or "doodoo" or some other silly baby-talk word.
