How did the ancient Israelites end up becoming slaves in Egypt? Where did they live before being forced to live in Egypt?

The short story is, there was a great famine in Egypt. Pharoah had a guy who was working for him whose name was Joseph, who was the son of Jacob, also known as Israel. Joseph had been sold into slavery by his jealous brothers (he was dad's favorite) years before. But at the time of the great famine, Joseph is now the No. 2 guy in all of Egypt, though his brothers don't know this and his father thinks he's dead.

Because of the great famine, Jacob sends his sons into Egypt to buy grain, and after an intrigue, Joseph and all his brothers and father are reunited. Pharoah welcomes Joseph's family with open arms and they settle in a city called Goshen. But as the generations wore on, the Israelites went from 70 people to about a million. The current Phaorah did not know about all the wonderful things Joseph had done, and fearing for his border which was protected by these alien peoples, he began to oppress them, and then enslave them.

The city in which Jacob lived was called Mamre, which is just outside of Hebron, which had been Caanan, but later became the land of Israel.

The story of Jacob begins in Genesis 25, but the actual story of how they all wound up in Egypt starts around Genesis 42.

Because of a famine the family of Jacob went to Egypt for food and because Jacob's son, Joseph, was administrator they stayed. But because they became many they were make slaves.

Before going to Egypt, Jacob and his family lived in Hebron.

In your Bible you can read the account of Jacob's life starting in Ge 25:20.

Isn't there a Disney movie about this? There was a seven year famine and they went there to survive. Egypt had prepared for it.

Originally, they went to Egypt to escape famine, but new leadership in the Egyptian government decided to enslave them. They were originally from the Palestine area or nearby. Abraham came from Ur of Chaldea and settled in the plains of Mamre, where his family lived for three generations. Then Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob or Israel, got sold by his own brothers as a slave to passing traders, and ended up in Egypt. You really should read it. It is a great story.

All of that is in Genesis and Exodus. You need to read the story starting with Joseph beginning in Genesis 37 through at least Exodus 1. It is a great story. I like to put the audio for it on while I do other things. It is free to read or listen to at https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genes... or on the free app YOU Version Bible.

There was a change in the Pharaoh dynasty; probably some sort of coup by outsiders (Ex 1:8). Read the rest of the story to answer your questions. They were never forced to live in Egypt, until they became slaves.

According to the Bible, they outnumbered the Egyptians and they worried that the Israelites would take over. They were not an organized bunch, so easily put into slavery.
