Hotels, particularly the 'expensive'ones are insured against that sort of thing. They cannot detain you. It is 'kidnapping' not to let another person leave the place where he/she is.

Depends upon what country he is in. If he is in the US, he can call the police and have himself arrested, which will stop the daily accommodation charges.

Either way, you should not send him any money. It's a scam.
