Contacting my retired teacher?

I want to send a thank you letter to a teacher i knew a few years back. He stopped teaching, so all i have is a facebook account and possible email. How do i email him and make sure it is the correct email. Or how do i go about messaging him to ask for his email atleast?

    Just say something like:

"I'm trying to contact Mr. So-and-so and who used to teach at such-and-such school in the year XXXX. are you him?"

add him as a friend for god sake, and chat to him on messenger. YOLO.

Add him on Facebook and say hi. If you're just trying to say thanks, that's all you'd need to do anyway. He'd probably appreciate the thought.
