Since you are an independent adult , you decide what to do yourself. You decide how much you stay in touch with them.

Well I think it would be good to go to learn more about their situation, but make it clear that you're only coming for the situation. Not because you want to come back to the family or that they were right or that you realized an error in your ways. Just for the situation. Set up some ground rules or something.
