How to torture someone?
I'm writing a book, and sometimes it's the little things I get stuck on. I have a group of people that are being held prisoner in a basement. They're chained up. I don't want the visuals to be silly. Should they be chained to each other, or the wall? Obviously I've never chained someone up, so I don't know how one would go about this. Anyway, a few of them get interrogated until one of them gives up the answer. Would they be taken to another room? Could he interrogate each one of them right there in front of the others? Maybe there's a chair in the center of the room they're taken to? I have no idea. They are necessarily getting tortured, just smacked around. Any help with making this more realistic would be appreciated! :)
I mean they AREN'T necessarily getting tortured, they're just getting smacked around!* lmao I don't need torture methods lmao. Just those two specific things about the chains and the location of interrogation. Thanks!

Rather than trying to come up with a typical answer to this, think about the intelligence and experience level of your character. It is alright to make mistakes if the character makes them.

They would be chained separately so they could not try to help each other escape.
They could be taken away to be tortured/beaten, or they could be tortured/beaten in front of the others. It would just depend on which approach the torturers thought would make the prisoners talk most quickly. Either way, they would probably be strapped into a heavy chair so they could not try to escape or retaliate while being worked over.

watch some episodes of the Tudors also read about the methods used by the Nazis, the North Koreans and the North Vietnamese to interrogate prisoners. Also read about how prisoners are interrogated in the secret prisons used by the Bush administration.

And where would the holders get chains......Use what you have and not what you think you should have.......

If you make it so the torturer is new at it too, it will be much more interesting and make him more believable and complex.
So maybe he starts one way, then another. He figures it out and gets better at it as you get better at describing it.

Duct tape your victim to a chair in front of a TV and force them to watch every single Twilight movie. If they haven't broken with that, then every episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians should do the trick.

Just read a history book. People use what is at hand. It's not rocket science. It is cruel, but it doesn't really take anything special.
When searching for the truth, you want to isolate people. You don't want them coordinating a fake story. When trying to scare and intimidate, you might want the experience to be seen by others. People "experience" what they see. You could in effect torture an entire room just by forcing them watch the torture of one and threatening that they are next.
People have been hurting each other for as long as there have been people. According to the Bible, the first murder was a man killing his brother.
Look up ancient Rome. Look up "Vlad" "The Impaler" Dracula. Look up Nazi Germany. Look up witch hunts and medieval Europe. War is horrible.

Have them listen to Justin Bieber on loop for hours. That ll get someone to crack. Listening to him is enough to drive anyone insane, especially people over 25.
