MacBook won't let me use YouTube anymore?

A couple weeks ago my MacBook started having popups saying I have a virus and leading me to these security sites. But it's only when I use YouTube. Never happened before. Now it won't let me watch videos on YouTube it says my browse doesn't recognize the format. My Safari is up to date. I don't know what to do. I thought MacBooks can't get viruses?

Update:

now popups happen on everything I click on while on Safari. Also leads me to fake apple support pages.

    This worked for me because I was having similar problems:

    I went to Safari (top left corner) / Preferences and deleted all cookies, because sometimes the problem is there.

    Then I went to Safari / extensions, found Adblock and installed it.

    No more problems and no more popups. Even Youtube does not make me watch ads before the video.
