"The same principles, which support or destroy Christianity, alike support or destroy political order and government." -- Timothy Dwight."?

Substitute "theism" for "Christianity," if you will. I'd like your thoughts on this statement. I posted this yesterday, but it was deleted. Archer, the subject of the sentence is "principles." Do theism and government have any principles in common?

It is certainly the thought of America's founders that godly folk are a necessity for a good government

George Washington was an Episcopal vestryman, and John Adams described himself as "a church going animal." Both offered strong rhetorical support for religion. In his Farewell Address of September 1796, Washington called religion, as the source of morality, "a necessary spring of popular government," while Adams claimed that statesmen "may plan and speculate for Liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand." I'm a Christian, and no, I don't agree with that at all. It's "political order and government" that promote capitalism, poverty, and war, all of which Christianity is opposed to. It was "political order and government" that executed Jesus Christ as a dangerous anti-government agitator.

    Just this....

    Romans 13:1-4

1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

That is wrong. But christianity is a primitive form of governance. Silly and superstitious, it was forced on the land by violence, and the threat of violence. It is very much the opposite of good government.
