If you make your own story for a home movie but use copyrighted characters in your movie can you monetize it?

    You would have to

    o license the copyrighted characters from the copyright holder(s).

    o or otherwise produce an authorized work

    Sometimes this can be complicated.

    e.g. I worked on something that had Disney-owned characters set in Disneyworld. Getting permission for the characters was separate from getting permission from Disneyworld.

    No, you're earning from other peoples' efforts. The Fair Use laws are quite specific about people not being permitted to earn money from copyrighted materials.
