How to stop screen tearing in games?

I recently bought a dell inspiron 15 7000 gaming laptop and everything works fine except some minor screen tearing. It works fine but if I move horizontally it gets a little bit of tearing so I was wondering if there's a fix to this? Note that the FPS is fine so I know it's not that the laptop can't handle it. For instance, a modded gta 5 runs flawlessly on high graphics yet rocket jump screen tears.

That happens when "frame sync" mode is disabled and a new image is ready part way through one display scan; you get part of one frame and another part of a different frame, that's moved slightly.

It happens when the "game speed" is either higher or lower than the monitor frame update speed; either way the two changes don't happen at the same time so you get partial frames.

The only cure is turn on frame sync; that will delay each update until the end of a display scan so the whole image changes smoothly.

But, it may cause lower frame rates or uneven video movement.

If the game settings allow it to run at higher than the actual display framerate (the game is waiting for the display update) it should be OK, you will not see any negative effects.

But, if the settings are limiting speed (as in eg. the game can only run 40fps and the display 60) it will miss frames. That in turn may mean you have to reduce quality settings slightly so a new frame can be finished just before it's needed, to keep the game playing smoothly.

All you can do is try it and tweak as required.

The graphic setting known as VSYNC will help with screen tearing. Screen tearing can occur if the FPS is jumping dramatically and isn't staying at a stable level.
