Diesel tractor won't turn over. Suspect bad wiring.?
This is on a 1975 Deere diesel tractor. Engine wont turn over when the key is in the start position. I was able to start it by jumping the two contacts on the starter with the key in the run position. I figure bad solenoid. Replaced the starter/solenoid. Still won't crank. I figure the ignition switch is bad. There is no continuity between the battery terminal and the start terminal when the key is in the start position. Bad switch.
I checked the continuity between the solenoid wire and the wire that connects to the start prong on the ignition switch. No circuit. The solenoid wire shows a circuit between the solenoid and the negative cable. Is this the problem? The wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid is shorted? Replace the wire between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid, should I try that next?

Sounds like a bad wire from the switch to solenoid. Try jumping 12 V to the little wire on the solenoid.

I have a tractor that requires the hi-lo gear shift lever to be in neutral, as well as my foot on the clutch.

Model number? Most tractor or lawn tractor starter circuits have interrupt safety switches to prevent power to the starter/starting if the trans is not in neutral or other devices like PTO are turned off, operator presence switch/seat switch, etc... A diesel tractor may have a wait system timer/relay which prevents power to the starter solenoid until the glow plugs warm up for several seconds. You'd need a wiring diagram to see which switches might be in the circuit or trace the wiring between the starter solenoid and ignition switch for any safety /wait switches...then check those for issues. If there is a starter relay in the circuit, check that for good ground path for the coil side of it. A loose / corroded ground wire/connection may prevent the relay from working or blown fuse, bad wiring, etc...Or if you just want to rig it to bypass any safety switches, just run a new or temporary wire of the same gauge size between ignition switch terminal and starter solenoid. Just make sure you start it with all systems off and trans in neutral ,wait for glow plugs to warm, etc..which might cause injuries.
