Does it matter what kind of stamp I use to send a letter?

That would depend upon the length of the letter which would effect the number of pages and therefor the weight of the letter. If it is thin, try a local store for stamps. Many stores in the USA sell them. If it is thick, then you will need to go to a post office and have them weight it. They will tell you how much postage you will need and sell it to you. If you are going to be doing this a lot, you can also ask them for more stamps. They are sold in sheets and maybe still in rolls. Just ask for, say, 5 or 10 stamps.

For a regular letter envelope weighing up to 1 ounce, you need either a Forever Stamp or other stamps equaling 49 cents. You can combine as many stamps as you need as long as they total the right amount.

One ounce is usually the envelope and up to 4 pieces of paper. A Forever Stamp that you buy today for 49 cents will always mail a letter, even if the price goes up. That's why it's called "Forever" as opposed to stamps that have the denomination (value) printed on them.

I don't think it really matters as long as it's a postage stamp.

Assuming we're talking about a letter, if you have a Forever stamp, stick it on the upper right corner and mail it. If it's a First Class stamp, it needs to be $0.49, or else you need to add another (smaller) stamp to make up the difference.

You just need to buy a stamp of the right value for your letter. You're not sending something very valuable (ie in a box) so all you need is a stamp for a letter. Go to a post office and buy the stamp. I can't answer your question specifically as to cost because all countries charge different amounts for stamps. What I in Australia would put on a letter is likely to be very different from what an American would use.
