When being gluten free is so much more common, nowadays, what do you think restaurants should be offering?

As a GF person, I think of how easy it would be to offer a few more things, yet most restaurants are inconsiderate.

I'm tired of salads, not being able to have bread/rolls, and nothing for dessert. I am so grateful for the places that put in the extra effort. Simply buying the GF bread/rolls and keeping it in the freezer and microwaving or a minute or two in an already hot oven works for me. Keeping GF pasta on hand and just one simple pot to cook it in is not that hard. I cook for people in my family and for myself side by side all the time. We handle is easily. I get annoyed when there are hardly any choices, especially in a nice place that ought to take the time.

Update:

Sorry for a typo.

The irony of it is that many products are naturally gluten free and have been for years. Anything without wheat in it is basically gluten free. The gluten free craze is a recent "invention" and more or less a way to charge the gullible in many cases more for something that was produced for years at a much cheaper rate. All they have to do is put "gluten free" on the label and they can raise the price significantly. The reality is that going gluten free is only helpful to those who have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Gluten is a natural product and has been consumed by those whose diet historically includes wheat and wheat products for thousands of years.

Unless you are actually a celiac sufferer, going gluten free is a fad and nothing more.

EVERY restaurant has gluten free offerings, things that are naturally gluten free. Baked potato, steak, salads, veggies, rice dishes, etc.

Its far too expensive and wasteful to have on hand and offer special gluten free foods when very few people ask for them..those foods then get old, and go to waste.

restaurants don't have to offer alternatives if they don't want to. going to a restaurant is a privilege, not a right. being gluten free is a common trend now, but only 1% of the population actually gets sick from gluten. gluten is harmless unless you have celiac disease. 1% is not enough for restaurants to care about unless they're specifically going for a niche audience and offer lots of alternative meals

If it was actually cost-effective they would. They're not running restaurants out of kindness. You're still less than 1% of the pop.

There are plenty or resturants that have the logos on various meals to let you know if they are vegitarian, vegan, and even gluten free - you just have to do your own leg work on this!

  • It became a trend because some celebrities were doing it, some people are going gluten free to lose weight. They don't realize how tricky it is to go out and find good gluten free options that are not salads.

I hear you, I'm gluten free too as I'm intolerant to it. Just ask them if they have any other gluten free options besides salads. Some of them have gluten free menus, but they don't use separate pots or fryers to cook the food in. The one's that get pi$$y at you for asking get a manager, or don't go back next time you go out or leave them a bad review.

What about steak and chips? Curry and rice? Steamed fish with vegetables? Soups with potatoes rather than bread? Stew and boiled potatoes? Stir fry (without the noodles) have rice? Roast vegetables with chips or roasted potatoes? Hummous with vegetables to dip in. Chilli and rice? Bean burgers (without the bun), chips and salad?

So so much more than just salad!

Then go to a gf restaurant. You have celiacs. Bread is just not going to be an option for you. Sorry but get over it. do you really want some dried up roll that's been in a freezer for months and microwaved? Like really? You want to go and pay for that? Lots of vegetarian and vegan restaurants have gf options. Check one of them out.

TGIF offers gluten-free menu items, so does Boston Market. Taco Bell does too. Some gluten free goods include eggs, bacon, and a steak! I'm gluten-free too...I like pork chops with a baked potato, green beans. Hold the bread rolls, lol.
