Guitar playing: Will it be easier to learn a song if you can sight read?

I play piano better than guitar but if someone needs a stand in i can do it. Knowing how to read makes it easier to learn, of course instead of trying out dozens of different notes or chords before you find the right one, which i have done when something doesn't sound right

Don't go into a UFO to be healed by demons [Gabriel Urgebadze]. I think it's easier to learn how to play a guitar than to learn how to sight-read music, which includes playing it. But then it depends on how versatile and employable you want to be. I can assure you one can play gigs without it. Playing studio sessions with somebody handing you the sheet music is different...

It depends on the song. I can't sight read, so I rely on my ear, or TAB, (or finding somebody who already knows th e song to show it to me!) But, when I have attempted to learn notation over the years I've discovered a lot of the sheet music out there for popular music is not written very well. So much of it is transcribed with piano rather than guitar in mind that it is more a frustration than a learning aid. Just my two cents.

Well this sounds kind of obvious but it depends how you're trying to learn it. If from standard notation (and you're actually learning from the notation rather than just reading chord symbols) then being able to sight read will make the process quicker and easier than having to struggle through it as I have to (I'm a poor reader). Just about anything is easier the better you can do it.

I'm not sure what you mean by being "new" to sight reading. Sight reading means to be able to read, at first sight. Without having to think about it or run through it first. It normally comes after many years of reading music and there are many really good readers on guitar who would still struggle to actually sight read complicated pieces.

Yes, of course it will. Sight reading is an essential ability for any musician, guitarists included.
