AR on iPhone 7 with iOS 11?

I just updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 11.

I can download and use AR (augmented reality) apps and games and actually use them.

I thought AR was only something the new iPhone could do (iPhone 8 and iPhone X).

Whats the case here?

What’s different between iPhone 7 and 8 then?

    There have been AR apps going back to at least the iphone 4, it's nothing new..
