I've killed my laptop - any advice?

I dropped it yesterday. Now I have a black screen. It says "a disc error occurred, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart".

But every time I do that, the screen goes black and then that message comes up again. Every single time.

You might have killed your hard drive. Or it might just have become disconnected.

Some laptops are easy to take apart, others are murder to work on.

First look on the back of the laptop to see if there's a door covering the hard drive. (Put your index fingers together and then your thumbs, and make a rectangle. The door would be about that size.) See if the disk drive is securely plugged in.

If not, then google "[model number] disassembly manual" and see if there's a step-by-step guide for disassembly. Also try on YouTube. Very often people will figure out how to work on these things and post a video on YouTube.

Laptops are held together with dozens of screws, all different sizes, round heads, flat heads, etc. If you do take it apart, keeping track of the screws is the biggest headache. We're taught to use muffin tins, using one muffin hole for each step of the process. And of course you need one of those little screwdriver sets that come with 150 different bits, of which you will use 4 or 5 all the time and the rest never.

    Good luck!
