I gave the first episode an 8/10 -- still have yet to see episode 2.

Getting down to business the only real gripe about Star Trek: Discovery is it felt like we jumped into the middle of something, and that something is fast moving river.

It's not about how it lacks the subtle and grace of previous Treks -- specifically TOS, TNG and Enterprise -- but rather how we jump in without knowing how to swim. With the moving scroll from Deep Space nine, Voyager and the first Star Wars movie (1977) -- one of only 2 good ones (6, 7, R1 were fair, 1, 2, 3 and CW were crap) -- it gave you water wings when you jumped in.

With Discovery when you jump in, you have 2 choices -- sink or swim.

But the first episode is like the one scene from The Last Samurai, where everything happened so fast and you ask yourself what the hell happened? Then when given a chance to stop and breathe, you realize what happened.

Characterization seemed more focused on Captain Georgiou, Camptain Burnham with Lt. Saru acting as caution with the comical interaction between Burnham and Saru without infringement, and the escalation between the Shinzhen and the Klingons.

It's one of those character developments that's best experienced and needs more than one episode to explore, but you get the idea right away without needing spoilers or knowledge of previous Treks to dumb it down for you.

The "Oh crap" cliffhanger left you needing to know what is happening next as already the show seems to know how to stand on its own 2 feet without needing Trek to help it walk, but still walks like Trek. Looking forward to the encore presentation of the second episode and if the quality is retained, I won't be disappointed.

    Source(s): I'm a hard core Trekkie.

I enjoyed it the most by not watching it. The trailer was enough to realize star trek is dead and this is just a spin off from the jj abrams crap.
