    You can do whatever you want (add, subtract, multiply, divide, exponents, etc.) to either side of the equals sign, as long as you do the exact same thing to the other side.

    12k + 6 = 4k - 8

    Let`s get all the k`s on one side. We need to subtract 4k from the right, so let`s do the same to the left.

    12k - 4k + 6 = 4k - 4k - 8

    The `4k` and `-4k` on the right cancel each other out.

    8k + 6 = -8

    Let`s get all the constants (numbers) on the right. We need to subtract 6 from the left, so do the same to the right.

    8k + 6 - 6 = -8 - 6

    8k = -14

    Now we need to get k alone. We need to divide the left side by 8, so do the same to the right.

    8k/8 = -14/8

    k = -14/8

    This can reduce to

    k = -7/4

    Done! Hope that helps :)
