A reasonably intelligent person can realize that there is no god. Fear of this "god" perpetuates the belief.

No. There is not sufficient evidence to justify a belief in God. As soon as someone is able to demonstrate sufficient evidence I will probably change my mind.
BTW: That is the difference between most atheists and theists. An atheist is willing to be convinced by the evidence while a theist rejects any and all evidence that contradicts their belief. That is intellectually dishonest.
