What are some amazing historical fiction books?
I love Philippa Gregory and have read many of her books (I am reading one now) I'm scared of other historical authors in case they aren't as good. I hate fantasy. Can someone recommend me some good historical fiction novels? I don't mind the era as long as it's not Queen Victoria or the 20th century.

Alison Weir has written several novels about the Tudors. She has also written several nonfiction biographies.
Some good historical novels:
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini
Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin
The House Girl by Tara Conklin
Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire (set in Renaissance era of Holland)
The Frozen Thames by Helen Humphreys
Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran
Lily of the Nile by Stephanie Dray

Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" series is excellent, although a lot of us fans wish she would hurry the heck up and write the final volume :) It's about the era of Henry VIII, narrated by Thomas Cromwell. If you've ever read or seen the play/movie "Man for All Seasons," Mantel's book will give you a much less "saintly" picture of Thomas More.
The Brother Cadfael books by Ellis Peters are a series of murder mysteries set in medieval England. The "detective" is a Benedictine monk.
Another monk-detective story of a very different kind is "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, set in medieval times in the remote Italian Alps.

This is a wide field - there's an awful lot of historical fiction out there (and a lot of awful historical fiction...).
However, I recommend Dorothy Dunnett, Edith Pargeter (aka Ellis Peters), Mary Renault, Lindsey Davis, Robert Harris, Bernard Cornwell, C S Forrester, Sharon Penman, James Clavell...
