They mean the problem is 'at the socket'
All phone devices need an ADSL filter (to protect the phone)
Some phone sockets are traditional Phone sockets only.
And you need to add a Filter plate or a Filter dongle
(as you would have had your modem-router when it arrived)

Some phone sockets have this filter built in Like this
https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/GPNTE5ADSL.h...
or add on front plate
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Solwise-ADSL-NTEFACE-SOL-...
In both cases- the filter can die (the electronic components get damaged by electrical spikes during thunderstorms or just old age...)
SO replace the filter, or at least add a new one..
And your problems will go away.
Broadband protected from the phone.... the phone protected from the broadband (noise)

How do the socks bust? The're plastic! Pull too hard, hit it with a chair, bank it while vacuuming, etc. Lucky they are easy to replace: two wires - you can do it!
