Are online job applications a waste of time?

I’ve applied for about 20 jobs online, and about 5 through a career fair. I’m 0/20 online, never even had anyone follow up, and I’ve been 4/5 at career fairs where they physically talked with me and took an application. I’ve also had recruiters at career fairs take my resume but told me to apply online, and I never heard anything from those jobs. The jobs I applied for weren’t unrealistic either, I was qualified and they were pretty much entry level. Do employers even look at online applications?

  • Not always. Every job I've had I've gotten through applying on line. I applied to hundreds of jobs before getting the jobs I had.

After applying on line give them a phone call a few days after you applied. Ask if they've received your resume / application and if they've had a chance to view it. If they have ask if they're interested in giving you an interview. If they're not interested or give you a bunch of excuses move on.

only 20 ??? that's nothing !! you need to look at job searching as your temporary "job"..............you should be spending at least 3 hours per day with: applying, answering emails, contacting potential employers, etc etc

the proper steps to applying online ( and by the way: 95 % or more companies now hire from online only ) - look at the few legit sites that post openings: careerbuilder, edjoin, monster, indeed, craigslist IF you are cautious of scams, your State and Cities near you; if you are not contacted w/in 2 weeks, send an email asking about the status of your app; remember that there are about 10 million unemployed, so for every opening there can be 100's or more applying for one opening

Not if that's what they require. You could just try sending them just a resume & see how that works out??
