What are some good interview questions to ask those applying for Christmas financial assistance?

I have helped with my community's Christmas for Kids initiative for many years. This year, we have changed the process a little and an interview portion is part of the application process. I am looking for some good questions that require extended answers, more than just yes or no, to ask during applicants interviews...to get a better understanding of why they need help, how we can help...etc. Thanks!~

Please tell me that you give out gifts and not money....please.

Is there a reason you don't earn enough to afford gifts?

Is there a reason you don't have a job (or a second one)?

What are you planning to do to avoid this situation next year?

That last one is a biggie for me. I am a proponent of temporary assistance for just about any reason...but I am against permanent handouts...

Here in the U.K. For food banks they have to produce proof of benefits received.

Interview? I would crawl away in shame. Who,s clever idea was that tomake them squirm?

    RIDICULOUS!!

You want people who are low income to BEG for why they should be included in your program.

How is that going to improve your process? Do you really think they are going to provide extended answers?!?!

This is why they are needing your assistance:

    1. they don't and just want to get free stuff

    2. they spend more than they make, even though they make a decent income

    3. they have a sucky job that doesn't pay enough.

    4. they have restrictions that don't allow them to get a better job (or more hours).

    ETC ETC ETC
