Your most upsetting war movie?

Yesterday I watched the Deer Hunter for the first time, and it brought me to tears. I was not expecting it to have such an emotional impact. I was planning on spending today watching other war movies I feel I missed out on (Apocalypse Now, Platoon) but I'm not sure I have it in me. So, are these movies as emotionally upsetting as Deer Hunter? And what's the war movie that got you the most (doesn't have to be Vietnam can be any war as long as its historical and not made up, for example Lord of the Rings doesn't count)

For me also, The Deer Hunter was the most upsetting. I would say you should try watching some other movies, they should be less upsetting and some tell a really important story. You mentioned Apocalypse Now and Platoon (I really like Platoon - it does have some very tense moments though). Others to consider would include: Midway, The Enemy Below, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Das Boot, Run Silnt Run Deep, Pork Chop Hill, The Thin Red Line, and Tora! Tora! Tora!

agree that Deerhunter is about the most depressing.

though Apocalypse Now is a great movie, i didn't find it as upsetting. it's a bit more surreal and that sets up a little emotional distance from it. platoon would have been as depressing, but i honestly find charlie sheen's voice over to be very irritating so that diminishes the effect for me.

Fires on the Plain (1959), Das Boot and Braveheart are also very depressing.
