Senior citizens, how many houses still use coal furnaces for their main heating?
Are there any left? Why are we still mining coal if not for heating?
I remember from my childhood, the coal truck backing up to our house and placing a chute in the basement window, to push the load of coal for our furnace. But that was so very long ago.
We kids were not allowed to play down there, because it was so filthy with coal dust.

None that I know of in Britain. We went to natural gas over 40 years ago for our domestic heating.

I am not aware of any where I live. People are using wood burning stoves and pellet stoves. I lean towards the pellet stove because there is no odor like there is with the wood burning stoves.
There was a coal chute in the house I lived in until I was 8. the furnace was a huge, monstrosity with arms leading all over the basement (or so it seemed). I was terrified of the basement and the coal chute.

My friend still lights a coal fire to supplement her central heating as her house is old and cold and has thick stone walls.
Also woodstoves and multifuel stoves are making a big comeback in the UK as people just love having a real fire to sit around and feel cosy.
If a house has a decent Multifuel stove, its all it really needs as the heat output is outstanding, and it can be kept in all night.
With the rising cost of oil and gas its no wonder many people are turning to more traditional forms of heating, especially countryside dwellers.
