Can stomach bleeding be fatal?

It certainly can be, although most cases are not.
Stomach bleeding is readily treatable and most bleeds are not acutely fatal, although left untreated they can get worse. A big bleed is of course fatal because, well, you lose all that blood. Smaller bleeds are not necessarily fatal, as they are often at a slower rate or seal themselves off, although they can recur which is why treatment is important.
The biggest risk factors of stomach ulcers and bleeds are perforation (where stomach contents get out of the stomach and into the abdomen, causing chemical damage, infection, and more), and penetration (if a major artery is hit and bleeds into the stomach). These are less common but can be serious.
If treated properly, though, most stomach bleeds are not fatal and you can make a full recovery.

It certainly can, especially in the case of elderly people or those taking blood thinners or aspirin.

Well, not if it's treatable. You might have ulcers which are open wounds in the stomach...see a doctor ASAP
