For the short term, consider letting the car stay broken and using public transportation to get where you need to go. It takes a lot of bus rides to add up to the cost of an expensive car repair.

If possible, consider moving where you live or changing jobs to make it easier to catch a bus, ride a bike, or even walk. I know that may not work for your situation, but it bears mentioning in case it does.

Over any holiday breaks and over the summer, work full time and set that money aside either for repairs or for a replacement vehicle.

Could you rely on bike, bus, and Uber, and just leave the car parked unless you really need it? That way it wouldn't need as much repair. If you got rid of it altogether, you could save on insurance and gas and use a car rental when you really need it.
