Is assigning possession to an inanimate object considered improper in a research paper.?
Example: "The compound's affect on the mixture caused it to change color." or "According to recent studies by the College of Winterhold, Example Academy's students pay $500 for every class session."

There is nothing wrong with assigning possession to an inanimate object. [By the way, it's 'effect', not 'affect'.] How else could you say what caused the mixture to change color? Examples:
1. The collapse of the house meant that the family were homeless.
2. The weight of the concrete slab caused the floor to give way.
3. The wind's strength caused the airport authorities to close the airport for a while.
4. The football seemed to have a mind of its own, because it rolled in all directions.
