Betta fish flaring his gills?
So I bought a very small plecostomus today, and it is staying very far away from my betta. My betta is now flaring its gills while looking at me. How long will he be doing this ? How can I stop him from doing this ?
Also the betta and pleco are in a 10 gal tank at the moment with plenty of hiding spaces for both of them.
And I can't move the pleco into another tank either because the other tank that I have already has a pleco in there and two of them could not be together.

Was it a good idea to put a pleco in the tank.?
Not really.

Flaring gills are nothing to worry about in this species. Though giving your betta time to adjust to you and it's new environment may help, aggression really depends on the specific betta. Some bettas really don't mind human presence at all as others take more time to get used to you.

You shouldn't keep another fish or animal in the same tank with a betta fish. They're very territorial and can be aggressive towards other fish. The flaring of his gills is probably a sign of aggression. You should separate them as soon as possible.
