why is my macbook screen fading around all the sides.?

I can only see it when the screen is darker. But if it's darker all four sides as if a ring around the screen is lighter than the dark. At start up all four sides have a light glow when everything else is dark gray.

It always has been solid color and it started up a few weeks ago. I'm noticing it more when I shrink everything to the center, so the background is dark gray, it seems to be putting a highlight around the black box the picture of the earth is in.

Any ideas?

Update:

It can't be an edgelit display because its about 1cm boarder all the way around and it started with only the top and bottom. In middle of the night it looks like probably 1 inch on the top and bottom and it didn't used to be doing that so somethings happing to the screen. Its about 4 years old

Get a new computer screen. Replacements can be done at the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple store.

Your macbook has an edgelit display. These are used because the lid is so thin. It's not a fault, just the (annoying) way that it's been designed!
