The man starts out by pushing his wife when he is mad. This escalates to hitting her when he is mad. This escalates to...................
The man's need for power and control is what drives his abuse.
( Actually that is not entirely true. Often a man's anger about something else triggers abuse too : abused when a child and is modelling Dad, overseas fighting for many years, alcohol etc..
