If I steal a DVD from the store and watch it, does that violate copyright law?
I mean of course I'd be guilty of shoplifting, but along with the disc, did I also shoplift the right to watch it legally? I'd think possession of the disc grants right to watch, even if you don't have the right to posses the disc. The rights go with the disc when you borrow from a friend, so I think they are like an energy the disc carries.

Good technical question. Since stealing a DVD isn't worth it to begin with I would just start there with the deterrent thought.
Some phones have facial recognition now. I wouldn't be surprised if store security cams get it soon.

No. You're just a normal thief

Unless you are "burning" the video on to the limited neurons active in your cranium, there is no copyright violation. You steal the DVD, that's theft. If the agencies involved in the making of the film ever find out you snatched it, you have removed the purchase/rental fee. Depending on how much money the film makes, you can be charged with the purchase price of the DVD, including 30% of the total the film made.

The copyright covers the material work, regardless of whomever is in possession of the media. You violate the copyright if you attempt to change, copy or distribute.

No. If you make a copy of it, then you violated copyright. Haven't you ever noticed that copyright contains the word copy?
