You buy them at Walmart and glue them on. Many already are painted and have designs, beads, jewels, etc. To make them look more realistic, you can use a file and custom shape them before applying over your existing nails or after they have dried.
I found some nice ones in the Only $1 store, glue and all the other day. (For my granddaughter). And also, you can customize them however you like before you apply.
This was the way it was done before all the expensive nail salons started popping up.
