    time to live

It sends and ICMP or internet control message protocol, to the destination with a time out of one. Every router that the packet passes will decrement that time out (TTL). When it reaches 0, the router it ends up on will send back a packet of data that says the packet died and include information like its IP address and name. It then sets this to 2, etc. It does this till the destination is reached.

Here is a good explanation https://2buntu.com/articles/1203/traceroute-how-do...

It sends a UDP packet to the destination taking advantage of ICMP’s messages. Looking at TTL (time to live) which "starts with 1" and then increments as it goes to the next step. By looking at the return your system examines the "route" between you and the destination. It also knows the time taken to get to that destination. ICMP is used because of it's ability to report errors and times.

The link shows you the full details and how all of that is done. I don't need to repeat all of it here.
