It may be that the neutral safety switch/range switch is out of adjustment or bad.

You also should disconnect the shift cable and see if the shifter works freely from Park to the lowest gear.

Once you figure out why it's hard to put the shift lever in Park the starter may work right in Park.

The lockout switch has gone out of adjustment or faulty. If it starts in neutral, just do it that way.

Apparently, your gear shift linkage is out of adjustment. If you're not smart enough to fix it on your own, find someone who IS smart enough, and ask them to fix it.

If I shift to Neutral, it starts right up. Has anyone else had a similar problem or have any advice on what to test? Truck is a '97 F250 LD with the 5.4. Thanks! Take a look at your tranny linkage and see if it is fully engauged in park. Make sure you chock the wheels just incase its not in park.

Check for a bad park/neutral switch. Check the linkage.
