Suppose 15 boxcars pass by in a time of 10.2 s and each has a length of 13.2 m. (a) What is the frequency at which each boxcar passes? (b) What is the speed of the train?

15 cars / 10.2 s = 1.47 cars/s
B
v = d / t = 15(13.2 m) / 10.2 s = 19.4 m/s

The frequency would be how many boxcars per second, so take 15 boxcars/10.2 sec and divide it out so it gives the answer in terms of just one second. (As you know, boxcar is not an official unit; the only official unit in that answer is the word "second" on the bottom. That is how it should always be with a frequency no matter what regular word is on top.) Speed would be given in m/sec -- many times knowing the units we are looking for can direct us what to do! Hint hint! :)
